Lee Ann Sherrill IREDELL CITIZEN Once a mighty flying machine, Iredell County’s MO-NG 017040 model AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter, saw better days when it served in the Vietnam War. Now discharged and deemed “surplus," the big bird is permanently grounded in front of the American Legion Hurst Post Troop 65 on Old Highway 70. In the spirit of honoring Veterans and giving thanks, for their service. Assistant Scout Master James Williams of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church Boy Scout Troop 1X0 of Mooresville, talked with American Legion Commander Don Webber about bringing his troop out and sprucing up the once mighty bird with a bright, eye-catching paint job. The troop also earned some bright, eye-catching Veterans Day Service Project merit badges for their hard work. With three pails of Army specific “olive green" Valspar exterior and a score of paint rollers, it didn't take long for the “spill crew” of Liam Buschel Kyle Ellerby, Brendan Kentler, Conal Myers. Kyle Ridgeway, Chris Terry, Cameron Williams, Senior Patrol Leader Michael Terry, Assistant Austin Kindred, Assistant Scout Master Tim Kindred, Assistant James Williams, Paige Kindred.
